Kranjska Klobasa PGI

Origin: Slovenia
Kranjska Klobasa PGI

Kranjska klobasa PGI, or Carniolan sausage, is a small Slovenian sausage made from pork, garlic, salt, and pepper, that find its origins in the times of the Austro-Hungarian empire. The sausage is smoked and cured and held together with a wooden skewer.  It is a reddish-brown colour on the surface and has a faint scent of smoke.

In Slovenia, the sausage is served whole and usually hot, together with cooked cabbage or sour turnip. It can also be served as a hot dog in a piece of dark bread, with mustard, ketchup, and grated horseradish. It goes well with wine and beer.

Kranjska Klobasa PGI is one of Slovenia’s most internationally recognisable gastronomic exports thanks to emigrating Slovenians who took the sausage with them out into the world.
