Apples

Origin: Germany
Apples

The region around Lake Constance in Germany is famous for its rolling orchards and the numerous types of apples grown there. It is one of the world’s best climatic growing areas for aromatic fruit. More than 250,000 tonnes of apples are harvested every year on around 7000 hectares of cultivated land.

The Elstar variety for example is a medium-sized apple with mostly red skin (some yellow). It is medium firm, juicy and can be used for cooking (apple sauce, desserts). Braeburn apples have red/orange vertical streaky appearance on a yellow/green background. They are very firm, crunchy and juicy with a sweet and sour flavour. They are ideal for use in tarts. Jonagolds are large apples and are more green-yellow in colour. They are crisp to bite into with a balanced, sweet flavour.

Every year during harvest season (Sept / Oct), Lake Constance apples are celebrated during Apple Weeks with tastings, festivals and apple-themed culinary delights.
